Ann Da Silva Johansson: Pedaling Across the Globe
Ann Da Silva Johansson is a Swedish adventurer and author who undertook an extraordinary solo cycling journey from Sweden to New Zealand. Embarking on this adventure just before her 30th birthday, she left behind a conventional life to traverse over 36,000 kilometers across three continents and 28 countries over two years.
Her route led her through diverse terrains and cultures: from the structured roads of Europe, through the heat of Iran, the rugged passes of Central Asia, the vast Siberian steppes, the high-altitude plateaus of Tibet, and the remote expanses of the Australian outback. Throughout her journey, Ann faced numerous challenges, including injuries, visa complications, and the mental hurdles of solitude. Yet, she also encountered profound kindness and hospitality from strangers, reshaping her perspective on humanity and the world. Her journey became a powerful story of resilience, adaptability, and self-discovery.
Ann chronicled her transformative experience in her book, Om-vägen: Tvärs över jorden på cykel ("The Detour: Across the Earth by Bicycle"), aiming to inspire others to embrace adventure and challenge preconceived notions about solo female travel.
Today, Ann resides in Hälsingland, Sweden, with her husband, Guilherme, whom she met during her travels, and their two children. She continues to share her story through speaking engagements, encouraging others to pursue their own journeys of self-discovery.
